63First, regarding cavity back/game improvements irons, I think that the "point of diminishing returns" concept applies a great deal to this category. As golf club manuacturers have been producing irons that are marketed as being "better" than the last while some choose to switch to Custom golf clubs, golfers have frantically switched clubs hoping to buy a better game. As I stated earlier, this is only my opinion, but as I've gone from one new set of irons to another, I always find myself coming back to my customized golf club. I truly believe that any "game improvement" iron beyond the Eye 2+ has only new looks and hype to sell. Stronger lofts have players bragging of 170 yard 9 irons, etc. The truth is, all things equal, my custom made golf club will hit just as far as any other iron on the market. Accuracy, not distance is what one should be searching for. Custom made golf clubs have that.
Forged Clubs vs Custom Golf Clubs
Next, regarding the increased interest in forged clubs, I've developed opinions in this area as well. Let me start by saying that I've also read all of the reviews on the forged clubs and have owned the majority of the higer rated ones. The one thing I will agree on is that good forged clubs feel real good when hit squarely. They have a softer feel that my custom golf clubs...but here again, the "good feeling" that I'm looking for comes from consistant, accurate shots. My custom fit golf clubs repeatedly produce in this area.

I've read on thousands of occasions about "working the ball" with the
forged irons. The general thought is that you can't with cavity backs. I beg to
differ. I can close down and hit a nice draw or open up and hit a soft fade.
Actually, most of the time, I just want to "work" the ball straight
to the hole.
Lastly, it seems to be a common concensus that forged clubs give better
feedback thereby allowing the golfer to improve his swing. Although I bought
into this mindset for a while, I've since determined that it doesn't hold
water. Sit back and really think about that statement for a moment.
"Forged irons give more feedback, thus allowing the golfer to improve his
swing." First of all, I can tell when I hit a shot on the toe regardless
of what type of club I have. Think about it, does it really matter what type of
club you have in your hand. If you know that you've hit the club on the toe,
whether it's forged or a cavity back or custom built has no bearing at all on the player's
ablility to correct his swing. One thing doesn't affect the other. A good,
repeatable swing comes from pounding balls, not having a particular type of
club. Otherwise, we'd all get blades and become a scratch golfers.

At last, a good evaluation of some of the myths bred of marketing strategy with regard to golf clubs. I would just like to add to these comments that if forged blades really produced better results, wouldn't ALL tour players be using them? At $1 million per week, the pro's ALL use what they perceive to be best for them.
There is really no other criterion than counts. And since on tour you'll find virtually every head known to man, it's pretty hard to rate them, don't you think? Good work!
